Junior Development Team

A racing program for kids ages 5-14. The focus is on developing racing skills through a fun, team oriented environment that includes parent involvement. Weekend training with four invitational races are held at local ski areas.

An Overview of Our Junior Racing Program:

The Timber Ridge Junior Development Team is a competitive and fun program for athletes between 5 and 14 years old. We've designed our program to introduce young skiers to ski racing and to provide goals and encouragement as they progress. We offer well over 25 hours of on hill training/instruction as we focus on the fundamentals of skiing and ski racing. Our program will help to improve the skills of a young skier for participation in High School racing, Nastar® racing and recreational free skiing.

What are the requirements for Junior Racing?

  • Athletes must be between 5 and 14 years old as of January 1st. No race experience is necessary.
  • 5 thru 8 year olds practice on Lumberjack and Sycamore. These athletes just need to be able to turn, stop and ski independently.
  • The 9 thru 14 year olds practice on Oak. No race experience is necessary. These athletes must be able to ski blue terrain comfortably. An assessment can be arranged if desired.
  • If your child is unable to ride the lift independently, a parent will need to be there to ride along.
  • All racers are required to wear helmets at all JDT practices and Invitational Races.

Thursday ARL is a 7 week/8 person team Ski league for intermediate to advanced Skiers 18 and over

Schedule and Times - Racing lasts 7 weeks starting January 5th with a "fun night" at the end of the season, weather permitting. The first start time for each night is 7pm. Racing for the night on average is done by 8:15pm-8:30pm.

Running Order - Teams will be given a start time to complete their first and second runs. Start times are rotated throughout the season to give each team a chance to be first in the running order. A complete running order for the season will be available on the second night of racing.

League Scoring - Each racer scores points for their team (1-10) based on their total time for both runs. A racer must finish both runs to be able to score points for their team. Total team points are based off the top 4 racers with two participation points available for teams that have 6 or more racers complete both runs for the night.

Points are calculated using the Race the Gates handicapping system. Each racer receives a handicap based off of their times against the pacesetter factoring in age and gender. For more information on the Race the Gates handicapping system visit:

Teams will be split into divisions (A,B, or C) after 3 weeks of racing based on their cumulative point totals. Division winners for the year are determined by total points with one throw out week.

Results, Awards and Prizes - Individual and team race results will be announced in the Snowshoe Bar after every night of racing. Enjoy beer and food specials with your team while results are calculated (generally takes 20-30 minutes after the last racer is finished).

Door prizes will be raffled off each night after the races. Racers must be present to win, so make sure to stick around after the race. Each team is responsible to contribute a door prize, (typically $50 value). Door prizes have included: gift certificates to restaurants or ski shops and crowd favorite.. cold hard cash!

Pricing and Signup - Racing costs $280 per team or $35 per person. That's $5 a night per person plus an end of the year fun night. Teams can sign up anytime online or at Timber Ridge. Each racer must complete a registration form prior to racing. Please have Teams sign up at the Same Time.

Not on a team??? - No problem. Sign up to race, indicate you need a team and we will put you on a team.
